Camera Angles for Merlin
There are many different camera angles and shot types used within this scene of Merlin. The introducing long shot of the Knight Valiant is framed with members of the crowd cheering in the background this is chosen to show that the crowd is happy with the knight winning.
Mis en Scene of Episode of Merlin
There is alot included within the apspect of Mis en Scene for this particular drama, due to the fact that it is a " costume drama" the entire wardrobe for the characters must be of the era it is supposed to be set in; this allows it to achieve verisimilitude. The crowd cheering in the background of the fighting connotes the acceptance of violence by the people there, and the view of fighting by society at the time, this suggests a very male dominated culture; patriarchy. The setting of the drama must also tie in with Mis en scene, this is so that the audience is able to read the preferred reading and that they understand that it is set in the past, The long shot on the castle adequately sets the scene and enables the audience to get a full feel for the setting. Within the hall when the knights are being introduced to the "Lady Morgana", a sense of binary opposition is created, as the masculinity of the knights bounces off the very feminine aspects given off by the female character. The social view of women at the time it is set is also reflected here, Lady Morgana only speaks when she is spoken to and is the first woman to appear on scene, her maid in the background also does'nt anything apart from to her mistress.
Aspects of Editing from Merlin Episode
In the scene of merlin there is alot of action, this includes sword fights, at the beginning the editing is quick paced and back by an adventurous style non diegetic track, which is also fast pace. The straight cuts used within the fight are good to show the passing of time and do so in rapid succession, this include match on action, for example when you see "the knight valiant" hit another person with his sword then, the next cut is the person on the floor, also when the shield and sword hit the floor. There is some degree of polysemy here and it helps to create a sense of verisimilitude for the scene.
